MWH Games - A Dwarven Mod Team

Greetings surface dwellers!

It’s been quite awhile since we’ve updated on the progress of DoKD and I wanted to reach out to the community and let everyone know what’s been happening.

The short of it is that the DokD project is, for all intensive purposes, shelved for the foreseeable future. It pains me to make this declaration, however, the events that have led to this decision are positive and encouraging.

Our team is made up of working developers who have full-time jobs, families, and responsibilities beyond the hobby that is MWH Games. Our modding projects are just that, a hobby, and thus come second to projects that pay the bills. Earlier this summer, three of our core members were brought onto high-profile, large projects that required more time from them than was going to allow further work on DoKD. It’s unfortunate for the mod, but it’s a testament to the quality and skill of our team that our work pauses not due to disinterest, but due to us needing to go back to work on AAA content.

On a slightly related note, if you’ve not seen the new trailer for the upcoming Skyrim DLC, check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsROQUWaHnQ. Those of you who followed our story closely will see a strong resemblance to the villains in our two story lines. It’s not the same story at all, but certainly a very similar character. With DoKD shelved, we’re all excited to see someone taking the Dragon Priest story line further and producing great content.

The MWH Games team will certainly be back in the future and we hope to see you all again when that happens. Will ever the din of Dwarven battle cries be heard amidst the snowy crags of Skyrim? Perhaps it will be another land altogether? Time will tell. Until then, Hammers High!

One of the antagonists in Dwarves of Karak Dok is the Dragon Priest, Irendil.  Here is the concept art for the mask we’re going to be giving him, courtesy of Crotchbeard.  I don’t know about you guys but I’m pretty excited to put a beat down on Irendil and get my characters wearing this ASAP!  Stats are still being fleshed out so I can’t say what it will do for ya besides make you look like a bad ass, but that’s enough isn’t it? :)

In other news, the Creation Kit released today! We’ll finally be able to dive in, learn the tool-set, and start building! Anyone used it yet? What are your thoughts?

The team has leveled up again!  MWH Games is happy to announce that we’ve added Senior Character Artist Alex Valdes to our ranks to work with us on Dwarves of Karak Dok.  Alex has experience sculpting, modeling, and texturing high-quality assets in both the feature-film and game spaces.  He’ll be a valuable addition to our already strong team and we’re looking forward to the Skyrim community getting to see his work in the mod.  If you want to see Alex’s public portfolio you can visit http://alexvaldes.blogspot.com.

MWH Games is currently looking to add an experienced 3D Character Artist to the team! This position is for the Dwarves of Karak Dok mod for Skyrim.

You will be responsible for working with the art team to create characters, weapons, armor and other items.  This includes modeling, sculpting and texturing game assets from start to finish.  We’re a small but growing team of game industry vets and game enthusiasts, and you will be collaborating primarily with the lead artist and the concept artist to execute the vision for DoKD.  You should be comfortable managing your own time, and of course must be willing to commit to hitting deadlines set by the project manager.

[UPDATE: January 14th, 2011]

Thanks to everyone who sent in their info and portfolios.  As of Thursday the position is now filled.  More might open in the future as we move forward and identify our needs a bit better so keep checking the site.  More info on our new character artist in the coming days.

Excited to be able to show you guys a couple more weapon concepts we finished over the holidays: the Two-Handed Hammer and One-Handed Sword. The vanilla Skyrim weapon designs are very monotone in color and feel, even the higher-end items. They tend to reflect the style and culture of Skyrim herself so it’s an appropriate design choice, albeit a bit boring at times. One of our goals for the weapon designs in DoKD has been to add some color and complexity to give the items a more interesting feel without straying too far from the game’s overall style.

Happy new year everyone and thanks for your support!

Wishing everyone a happy 2011 holiday season!  Hopefully you’ve got at least some time off work, family, and any other responsibilities to hunker down and play some games!

We’re pushing to get the complete Mithril weapon set drawn and ready to build before the New Year so Noud has been busy. Below are the finals for the one-handed hammer and the dagger. The hammer is my favorite design so far. Looking forward to smashing some Thalmor face with that thing.

Representative of the frozen lands of Skyrim and as well as the heroes of our story being frozen in time, Noud’s new logo couldn’t fit our project any better.  The style is befitting of the Dwarves of Karak Dok and I am looking forward to stamping it all over our images and in every other place I can.

What can I say…the man has skills.  What do you think?

Noud strikes again with this great sketch and color of one of our Dwarf characters in DoKD.  We’re experimenting with the look and feel of some of NPC’s as well as being in the early stages of armor design.  Needless to say, this one came out really good.

DoKD - Balmer Concept

As early as we are in the design stage for the NPCs and their armor, this guy is so cool looking I’ll be surprised if you don’t see him in the mod. :D  Want to see more of Noud’s work?  Visit his website or check out more concept art from Dwarves of Karak Dok in the gallery.
